RPM problems (finding them, downloading)

I'm trying to update 2 RPMs on Mandrake 6.0
There are 1. emacs and 2. lynx
I need newer versions of both. The emacs is
totally unworkable.

I can't always find RPMs on the WWW, even though I
know they must exist.

When I find what looks like it, I get funny characters
in the browser when I think I am trying to download it.

Once I get the RPM on my machine, I (ususally) can
install it, at least I have done it.

Or would it be simpler to remove the RPM and find
the source pkgs for both?

Any advice appreciated. P.S. I haven't updated Mandrake
for several reasons, one being that the download stalls.

you can get the emacs source at www.gnu.org - i always try to download the source instead of a pre-compiled rpm, for compatibility reasons. the compiling isn't difficult at all, it's usually just three commands - the README should have instructions.

speakeasy.rpmfind.net, and right-click to download, because due to some mime-type ure browser may think it's either text or rpm like in realvideo.

btw, the *real* reason emacs isn't workable is, well, cuz its emacs.

Long live VI :-]

Check out the RPM repository. It has every RPM that one can think of.

Good Luck!!
