RPM problem in Firefox

Im using Firefox 1.0PR in SuSE 2.0

Im trying to download a RPM file for a Bittorrent program, but when i click the link to download it keeps trying to open the file with Real Player inside of the Firefox browser. I looked at the file type/plug-in list in Firefox preferences but RPM isnt listed as being associated with any plug-in so why is it trying to open with one rather than just downloading?

Thanks.

Why dont your try checking whether realplayer is associated with .rpm extension ? Maybe a wild goose chase....

haha. i havent even opened real player since i installed my OS. i just switched stright up from Win 98 to Linux a couple days ago, so im still figuring many things out.

BUT ANYWAYS. i cant find any options within real player to check what file types its associated with or anything. i think the problem is in firefox, but im not sure.

if i can get a different app to play real player audio & video streams i will happily get rid of real player and probably solve this problem. but i need to use it to listen to pretty much the only net-radio station i listen to (BBC 1xtra).

I found this from google
http://service.real.com/help/errors/error11.html

It says that realplayer can open files with extension .rpm ! But then it should open only if u click open with.
What preferences have you set for firefox downloads in Edit->preferences->downloads ?

The realplayer on my linux box is 10.0.2.608 (gold) ! In this Tools->Preferences->General; there is a file location for web browsers ! Is yours set to firefox ? Could this be the problem ? If you unset it will you still be able to listen to radio ?

I usually dont user realplayer much, so each sentence is punctuated with an invisible disclaimer

that is odd that real player has a file format with the same extension. i would have thought that would have been considered when bundling real player with SuSE.

my download settings are just to "Ask Me Where To Save Every File", "Show Download Manager", "Close DL Manager when DL is Done". Then where it says "Automatically preform the associated action with each of the following file types" there is nothing in that box. I would think i would be able to fix it there but like i said, it doesnt associate RPM files with any plug-ins on the list.

im gonna try to just put the link to the rpm through YaST and see if i can do it like that.

I had the same problem, after a real-player installation.
What you need is to deselect the plug-in association between real-player and the RPM extension.

The firefox preferences menu is very messy, but I found that this can be done under:

Edit > Preferences > Download and then and the bottom right corner click on Plugin.

In the given list look for RPM extension and deselect the activation box.

After that, the download should be proposed for *.rpm file.
