RPM issues

I can't seem to uninstall Opera (I started using FireFox instead). I'm a Linux newbie... I'm sure lots of RPM questions get asked, I've searched around for some answers, but none of them are helping. I think the problem is that I didn't install Opera into the default directory when I did it, so now it can't find the files it needs to uninstall it. If I go to the RPM file from the GUI and open it, it tells me the package is already installed... which it is, I can still run it. However, when trying to access the rpm from the Terminal, I get these error messages:

Here's my command:
rpm -e opera-7.11-20030515.4

Then, this gets displayed:
error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

Similarly,
rpm -i opera-7.11-20030515.4-shared-qt.i386.rpm
error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

Any help would be appreciated. Let me know if you need more information from me in order to help.

log in as root

log in as root before uninstalling.
If you don't know how to do this, from a terminal type
su - (press enter)
root (press enter)
password (press enter)
To query which rpms are intalled you can
rpm -qa (lists all
rpm -qa x* (searches for all rpm installed with packagename that starts with x and has any character or number behind it)
rpm -q package name
good luck.

Ok, here's what I tried based on your answer.

[root@localhost root]# rpm -qa o*

openmotif-2.2.2-14
...
opera-7.11-20030515.4
...
openmotif21-2.1.30-8

[root@localhost root]# rpm -q opera-7.11-20030515.4
opera-7.11-20030515.4
[root@localhost root]# rpm -e opera-7.11-20030515.4

and then it hangs... my cursor goes down to the next line then it just keeps blinking.

Note: when I tried "rpm -qa o*" from my login name (before signing in as root), the search returns nothing. It does list others (non-o's) though. For example, I tried "rpm -qa a*" and got a list of several packages. I don't know exactly what this means, but I assume that logging in as root is going to be an important step.
