rpm error

I'm trying to remove the PostgreSQL package (postgresql-server) from my RH8.0 system using the command:

rpm --erase postgresql-server

and it returns the error(s):

error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

lsof doesn't show anything having that file open. What could cause this lock failure?

Anyone know just what's going on here?

Or should I just get a list of the installed files and delete them by hand?

Of course, then won't the rpm database be out of sync with reality?

TIA,

Rick

Aarrggh!!! Too many darned xterms open!

Thanks! That solved the lock problem. But NOW it's gotten REALLY weird. Now the command just hangs. A ps command shows it to be sleeping. A Ctrl-C will not stop the command either. I must go to another root session and issue a `kill -9 pid' to terminate it. Even an `rpm --query' command hangs.

Curioser and curioser!

FYI to anyone following this thread:

There is an apparent bug in rpm that causes this sort of snafu. It was first reported (as far as I can tell) in Bugzilla on Red Hat's site (bug no. 73097) back in Aug 2002 and additional reports have been added as recently as early Feb.

Most people encountering this one have been removing all the ``__db*'' files in /var/lib/rpm and doing an ``rpm --rebuilddb''. Seems drastic but that's what I wound up doing and I can at least query now. Still can't get the postgresql package removed gracefully. :-(

Harrumph! And to think rpm was one of the reasons I switched from Slackware all those years ago. (sigh)

Later...
Rick
