RPM dependencies?

I want to install a RPM (whois) , it requires libc.so.6 dependency, I installed
the compact RPM pkg containing libc.so.6 with no problem, the /lib/libc.so.6
files are present in my system. when I try to install whois rpm I get "failed-
needs libc.so.6". I am running Mandrake 8.0. Anybody help?

try running ldconfig to update your libs

and make sure /usr/lib is in /etc/ld.so.conf
