rpc.statd won't start

I cannot get rpc.statd to start. /var/log/message has
rpc.statd[31315]: Cannot access current drive after dropping privs: access ().

Have trawled the web and found that this prob is usually due to lack of user called rpcuser, or wrong permissions on /var/lib/nfs.

However I have rpcuser set up, and permissions set correctly.

Any other suggestions?
