route system bell (system beep) through ALSA...

I was wondering if it was possible to route or pipe the system bell through the ALSA mixer rather than just have it blare through the PC speaker? I don't mind having the speaker attached for mission critical beeps but not for hitting backspace accidentally. Is such a thing possible? I'm pretty new to linux.

Apparantly it is possible: HOWTO Virtual PC Speaker
The instructions are specific to Gentoo, but no doubt the principle can be used for virtually any distribution.
I hope that helps.
