You should be able to boot into single-user mode and enter a new root password.

Did you boot into single user mode? And were you prompted with a login or not when or if you booted to a single user mode?

Type Linux 1 at the lilo prompt or append whatever you need to to laod runlevel 1. instead ofgoing multiuser, it should just run bash.

Let us know if it works. For future reference you can also dump out to level 1 if you type init 1 at the console, but you need to be root to do that, so it won't help atm.
