i'm sorry if i was unclear, gentoo's portage/emerge is a valid alternative, especially considering my use of the term rolling release
but what i was asking was if there is a way to update software (to a major version not just patches) by specifically using the GNU build system, and if so how

*should i uninstall the older version and install the newer version in its place? what if i would like to "update" a major component of my system, the linux kernel for example? should i install the new version and uninstall the older version? would there be any other steps required to make the switch? is this a possible method, furthermore is this the best method with GNU build system???
