rmoving GRUB and/or MBR

This was started in another thread but I wanted to zero in on this question. Does anyone know of a way to remove GRUB and/or the Main Boot Record from my RH9 disk so that I can reinstall windows? I can probably reinstall RH9 and change the boot loader config that way, but that's a pain.

You don't have to remove grub from the mbr to install windows
you can have the windows installation program overwrite the
MBR if you want to use it and get rid of linux. I believe modern
versions of windows can install without overwriting the MBR.
grub-install will re-install grub without have to reinstall the
whole OS. To change the way grub behaves you just have to
edit its config file.

Sorry about the flurry of options and lack of real detail, but I'm
a bit confused as to what you actually want to do.

grub-install ??

LogicG8:

Would grub-install work from a rescue boot? I toasted grub somehow by messing with partitions and now can't boot into SuSE. I am able to boot up in rescue mode using the install CD, but I don't know how to get grub back in business.

Yes grub-install will work from a rescue disk
if you didn't destroy your data when you
messed up your partitions.

grub-install install_device

What I am trying to do is install windows on this small(4.3G) drive from a dell restore disk. Then I will reinstall RH on the 12G disk. The problem is I have only this restore disk and not the win98 disk and restoring(reimaging) the HDD doesn't remove GRUB so it hangs on boot 'cuz the linux partition is gone and it doesn't know what to do. I have tried this twice. I downloaded a win98se bootdisk from bootdisk.com and it won't boot with it on my 98 system, but I have yet to try it on the linux. BTW this is a laptop so I have to manually swap HDDs when I want to swith OSs. Thanks

What you should probably do is boot up with a boot disk and run fdisk /mbr

That will completely wipe your master boot record - any boot information (including GRUB, I believe) will be gone. Then you can install win98 and redhat after that...
