ripping DVD and converting to avis?

I have couple of DVDs of cartoons for my kids that I would like to rip into avis and pack them on my NAS. For the work I have been using dvd::rip and it's ok, but as one DVD has several chapters the process is quite not so fluent.

I would like to pack it all in batch mode, start it and go to bed.

So whereas it is quite quick to extract the different parts in VOBs with dvd::rip and it is also quite handy to omit the trailers and stuff - for actual ripping commands I could use some help.

I have been using xvid and dual pass - I only give a generous target size, but I could go for BP of 0.9 - no change in aspect ratio or stuff like that.

So now - does anyone know which commands are behind dvd::rip? How can I accomplish this with commandline?

Yes, look at

lsdvd
ffmpeg
mencoder

Those 3 will allow you to rip and encode anything that you want. ffmpeg and mencoder have so many options you'll still be finding out their abilities after a year of using them. lsdvd will show you what's on the disk.

also look at
libdvdcss

Let me know if you need any help after you have become familiar with them.

I wrote a short guide that may help:
http://htexmexh.my3gb.com/linux/encoding.html

Personally, if I didn't have to make it Divx/Xvid compatible for some player, I would use mkv with h264 and aac.
