Rhythmbox - Unable to load tracts

New installation Ubunto 6.10.

I cannot get single song tracks into the Rhythmbox by dragging or importing either file or folder. Trying to right click and play a track does not work either.

The post click cursor wheel turns but nothing else happens.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Do you have the proper codecs installed? Try 'sudo apt-get install gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly'

That did it. Thank you.

I have the same problem, but in Debian. The packages listed don't seem to exist even in debain unstable. Am I out of luck?

You need to add debian multimedia to your /etc/apt/sources.list:
http://debian-multimedia.org/
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and add the appropriate mirror for etch, testing, or sid. Then install the apt GPG key from the FAQ page:
http://debian-multimedia.org/faq.html

ah ha, many thanks.

Scratch that last post of mine. I got a chance to actually try it out, but after installing the "gstreamer0.8-plugins" package it still won't load some mp3 files. It loads others, though, so not all mp3 is bunk'd. Also, programs other than Rhythmbox box can load and play the mp3 files in question.

apt-get reported that the specific packages reccomended, gstreamer-plugins-bad and gstreamer-plugins-ugly don't exist in stable even with the debain-multimedia source added in, which is why I just used the 'plugins' package. Should I have got something else?

I'm not using debian atm. I tried out etch for a while when it went to stable.
Make sure you have non-free sources in your sources.list. Also, afaik programs like mplayer and vlc come with all the codecs to play mp3, dvd, etc. And see this from the debian wiki:
