Rhythmbox returns failed to activate the shell: (null)

When I start Rhythmbox, I get this "failed to activate the shell: (null)" dialog box. What can I do about this?

From the rhythmbox FAQ
Quote:
This issue is caused when Rhythmbox is not installed in the same prefix as GNOME (bonobo-activation, specifically). The easy workaround for this is to pass --no-registration to Rhythmbox. You may also link the GNOME_Rhythmbox.server file into your prefix/lib/bonobo/servers directory.

I installed rhythmbox from source and used the --no-registration workaround to stop the dialog box from popping up. Now I'm trying to get the rhythmlets gdesklet to work and it requires bonobo-activation so I can't use the workaround. I have GNOME_Rhythmbox.server in /usr/local/lib/bonobo/servers so as far as I can tell it should work, but it doesn't. Does anyone know how to fix this so I can use rhythmlet?
