RH9 Upgrade=KDE starting problems

I've read several of the posts about the flawless upgrades from RH8 to RH9 and decided to give it a go myself. After the problems I've experienced, I'm beginning to think that was a mistake.

The install went fine and there were no indications of problems early on. I opted to let it do the defaults and upgrade the boot loader configuration. No problems there. When it booted, however, it would try to go to the graphical login screen, flash a few times, and lock with a blank screen. So I booted into runlevel 3 by editing the grub boot file and logged in without X. After checking the logs, I determined that it was hanging while trying to load the glx driver so I commented it out and rebooted. (I have a Nvidia GEForce 4 card.) This brings us to where I am now.

When I try to boot into KDE, a small error window comes up saying that it failed to start kdeinit. I click OK and it offers for me to check my ~/.xsession-errors file. Here is the result:

startkde: Starting up...
/usr/bin/startkde: line 227: 1018 Segmentation fault ksplash
/usr/bin/startkde: line 231: 1019 Segmentation fault LD_BIND_NOW=true kdeinit+kcminit+knotify
startkde: Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation.
Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory
/usr/bin/startkde: line 248: 1021 Segmentation fault kwraper kmserver $KDEWM
startkde: Shutting down...
Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory
Error: Can't contact kdeinit!
startkde: running shutdown scripts...
startkde: Done.

Fortunately, I can still log in to Gnome. However, when I do, there are still problems. Some programs mysteriously won't start and give no indication of why. Also, when I try to compose an email with Evolution, I get the error

Could not create composer window:
Unable to activate HTML editor component.
Please make sure you have the correct version
of gtkhtml and libgtkhtml installed.
The error from the activation system is:
Child process did not give an error message, unknown failure occurred.

This could have been a problem with the previous installation and I wouldn't know. I've always used KDE. Also, I don't know how I could have an incorrect version of anything installed since I just upgraded my system, but anyway...

I doubt these issues are very much related, but any ideas are greatly appreciated. I'd really like to get KDE back up and on the level.

Thanks,
SenorPedo

Here's the update: I upgraded KDE to version 3.1.1 from the bianary rpms provided on kde.org by redhat for 8.0, still no dice. Same problem, same error message, same everything. I looked at the startkde script and can't make anything from it, so I'm really at a loss here. Any help is greatly appreciated. I really want to get everything back up and running and get on with my life. Darn you Redhat 9!!

Thanks,
SenorPedo

Wow, looks like I've stumped the linuxquestions community...didn't think it was possible. Unless there happens to be a KDE guru lurking in the shadows out there somewhere, its looking like I'm just going to have to back everything up and wipe it clean. Damn, just when I had everything the way I liked it. I'm thinking redhat still has a way to go on the upgrade train...I've had to do this on almost every upgrade from redhat 6.1 (when I first jumped on the Linux bandwagon) on up to now. Anyone else notice the same thing?

Here's a solution that you may not like: Save all your config files and important stuff, wipe the partitions and do a clean reinstall of the whole thing!
If it doesn't work now, you're in quite a mess!

Yeah, thats an incredibly poor solution, but its what I ended up having to do back in April. I fought with it for 2 weeks but lost in the end. I still contend that RH has a long way to go before they can claim smooth upgrades from one release to the next. Seriously, from 6.1 on I've ended up having to wipe the disk and start fresh.

Best of luck to you, I wish I had found a better solution myself.

yeap, that's me! Giving away incredibly poor solutions!

Upgrades are still experimental in linux, but I've given it a shot with Mandrake (upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1) and it worked beautifully.
Try a clean install... It's bound to work!

Actually, I did do a clean install and I have the same errors as everyone else here. Im pretty pissed at redhat, this should not be that hard. Hell, I can run knoppix and it will detect and configure my damn video card and monitor correctly. WTF?

If anyone has any luck, then icq me #137037381

Just got the same issue here. Looks like it always core dumps.
It is maybe a librairy issue...

Is there anyone who has found a solution for this ?

How I got it WORKING.

Ok Guys... I've got it working...

I had to DEINSTALL the following filesets:

NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2802.rh71up
NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2960

using the following commands:

rpm -e --nodeps NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2960
rpm -e NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2802.rh71up

and then reboot the PC... KDE worked.
Hope it will help some guys makin'it work.

I just reinstalled 7.3. Redhat should be ashamed of that pos that they call an os. I had more crashes off of that then the shit that they make us work with at work. 4 times in 2 hours is not worth my time and effort.

Another possible work-around

My RedHat 7.2 system was configured to do OpenGL development prior to my upgrade to RH 9 (including having the Linux drivers from nVIDIA).

I saw the same issues, but did not have either of these packages loaded:

NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2802.rh71up
NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2960

I fixed the problem by upgrading to the latest nVIDIA Linux driver (version 4496 from www.nvidia.com) after the RH 9 upgrade completed.
