RH v9.0 breaks a few things... but its still pretty cool
Okay,
I am pretty sure this is related to the Glibc version that comes with RH v9.0, but just wanted to let everyone know that the following do NOT work: -Nvidia drivers (needed for OpenGL) -Codeweavers Crossover Plugin (needed for Windows plugins in Mozilla) From what I can tell, its going to be a couple of months before the Crossover plugin (v1.x) is fixed. But v2.0 should work out of the box and that will be released in a week or two. I don't know what's up with the Nvidia drivers, but I had to uninstall the kernel and GLX rpm's to get Xwindows to work in RH v9.0 at all. There is no "Xconfigurator" anymore. I really don't know how you are supposed to configure XWindows from the console now. Other than those two things (so far), I am very pleasedwith RH v9.0. -KevinJ |
Nvidia drivers will not work with RedHat 9. It is using a new threading technology called NPTL, or Native Posix Thread Library, that its predecessor Red Hat Linux 8 lacks. NPTL is not currently compatible with Nvidia's drivers.

Thanks Bruce.
I guess Nvidia is working to fix this. I don't need OpenGL at work so it doesn't really matter, but I am glad I found out before I upgraded my home box. :) KevinJ |
From RH 8 to RH 9 so soon?
It seems like RH made a rather quick transition from RH8 to RH9, any idea why?
Also, what are the things you like in RH9 that have been improved or were missing in prior RH versions? |
ACPI is now in the RH kernel. God I wish I could get RH9 NOW!!!

As someone posted in another thread... Nvidia has already corrected the driver issue and downloads are available from their site. I am now running OpenGL without and issue.

Just downloadeed and installed them on two machines trouble free install. Went great.

how about the new nvidia driver releases are they working?
and what good technology called NPTL gives linux? |
I do have access to the RedHat network, but I got the ISO's yesterday much faster through
http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/rh9.html Was announced on slashdot. I installed the bittorrent thing, took 5 minutes, and the download took 4h20 for all 3 files. Mlp |
P2P software that won't stop uploading? No thanks, I'll wait till the ISO's hit linuxiso.org

I solved myproblem. Screw bit-torrent, I signed up for RHN. I can and am now downloading the RH9 iso's from RH. I can have my new version and feel good for supporting the cause. Oh yeah and get support for a linux product. What a concept. $60/year is a little steep but at least it's going to support open-source. Still cheaper than that other OS.
God bless T1 |
