RH doesn't detect my cdr drive? (more details)

I got red hat linux 8... on my ahtlon box.

when I try to burn a cd.. I first find out which is dev...

cdrecord -scanbus

and get the following...

[root@216 prog]# cdrecord -scanbus
Cdrecord 2.0 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 J?rg Schilling
cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open '/dev/pg*'. Cannot open SCSI driver.
cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make sure you are root.
cdrecord: For possible transport specifiers try 'cdrecord dev=help'.

What causes this? I am completely, lost, thanks for any help.
