Retail and Banking information displays

Hello, Is there a software even Open Source or not for Retail and/or Banking information display networks?

Like those information screens that have most banks or restaurants.. even night clubs..

Once I found a software
called navori server but I think is too expensive... once I watched in Jack in the Box a display rebooting and it was linux...

thanks in advance.

Your question is pretty vague. "A software"? What do you need/want it to do? What kind of environment?

You can run pretty much any version of Linux, and there are several desktop environments that support "kiosk-mode", which is what you're talking about. And the software can be whatever you'd like. Web pages, a program, whatever. Linux also supports touch-screens, so that's not a problem either.

Since you don't say what you're trying to do, it's hard to be specific.

I think I was specific, I am looking for software that is used commercially on retail or banking for information displaying.. such those used by Jack in the Box, Bank of America, etc...

I founded something windows based and it costs $5,000+... that is why I remembered watching kiosk based linux based applications for that purpose and I would like to give a try... just looking for alternatives...

thanks again..

No, not specific at all. Retail usages vary quite a bit from banking, and those both from restaurants.

And again, are you talking about something interactive, or static (just playing a canned demo, or set of slides?). If you want to display web pages, you're going to need different software, than if you're trying to run a demo program, driving from a database, or hook to the Internet to display feeds from video cameras. All of these have usages in a 'kiosk' environment, but have different needs.

Linux in kiosk-mode will do what you want. We can help you, but need some details before we can do it.

An analogy would be asking someone "I need a vehicle to move people around". That's specific in a way, but also very general. How many people? How fast? On road/off road? etc. What you get suggested is going to depend on those details.

Can you post any links or images to the sort of thing you mean?

Oh, sure I can tell what sort of features we need, something like:

- Can be played on any s-video or vga display (lets say with a embedded computer as player) micro pc
- Played content can be scheduled
- Can control all players from a server and from internet (schedules, updates, etc)
- can update contents from internet (dont need to go to each display to update it)
- can play many media types: mpeg, dvd, avi, divx, power point, flash, plain text, rss feed, pictures slide show.
- Network based, something like this diagram: navori
- This commercial software do it navori server but is so expensive =(

do you think you guys can guide me on how to build a solution with kiosk mode Linux, or should I definitively look for a commercial software?

Thanks again....

Aldo
