Ugh. You're using centos, right? So even if it's part of the
most basic install it's still part of an rpm ... find out WHICH.
List what else is in it.

I find it really hard to believe that adding one line to the /etc/resolv.conf is so difficult. I have been using FreeBSD for over 10 years and know my way around linux fairly well. Is this some sort of sick joke or something as far as i know centos is exactly the same as redhat is the minimal install on redhat using rpms too.

Fix changing resolv.conf changing automatically

prepend nameservers 127.0.0.1
search canmail.org

have searched high and low but just get a bunch of different answers most of which do not make sense.

This is caused by changing from a static ip to dynamic ip & back

refer to /usr/share/doc/dhclient-3.0.5/dhclient.conf.sample

create /etc/dhclient.conf

containing line below changing the ip to your ip
prepend domain-name-servers 127.0.0.1;

this will change resolve.conf from

; generated by /sbin/dhclient-script
search your.domain
nameserver 192.168.5.1

To This

; generated by /sbin/dhclient-script
search your.domain
nameserver 127.0.0.1
nameserver 192.168.5.1

As i have 3 nics to switch between on my laptop.

Note changing resolv.conf files in /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles
won't fix this problem.

Enjoy!
