Resolution problem: offset workspace

I attempted to increase my screen resolution in gnome from 1024x768 to 1280x1024 by editing XF86Config and XF86Config-4.
It mostly worked, except now my workspace only exists in a 1024x768 rectangle in the upper lefthand corner of the screen. I can only select things on the desktop in that area, and my background image is messed up; it seems to load one copy of the image full size, and then another copy spanning the rectangle on top of that.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a monitor setting issue

was your exact model detected or did you set it up manually.

Is the virtual desktop being used, where the part of the desktop shown moves with the mouse.

It sounds like a combination of monitor screen size out of adjustment + virtual desktop
