resolution

got vector linux up and running in the i486...VL 2.5
its video card is a Cirrus Logic CL-GD5426. ok so i told Xwindows that i am using Actix Star Pro becuase it uses the same chip and cirrus is not found in my list..

after trying around many settings and changing symLinks i was able to make X start up with "startx" but there is a problem...the resolution is TOO big for it....i stated the machine to use 640 X 480 i am using /usr/X11R6/bin/X_VG16

cause SVGA makes the things too big for me.
well when icewm or xfce starts the resolution is not good but it works...the problem is that the resolution is too big for the monitor..when i scroll down or sideways i see the rest of the windows...how can i make this virtual resoltuon change so its the same as my physical monitor? please help
also how can i make the way the GUI looks make it look better cause in Win95 it looked better....so the videocard should be able to give me some more decent looks
