Hello all,
I am working on getting a Linux (Debian) machine up and running with Request Tracker for a demo to management (opensource ticketing system, flexibility, scalability, price). I have tried following the wiki on the Best Practical site with very little success. My lack of understanding could be attributed to my "newness" to Linux as well as some contradicting instructions within the Wiki (which as a noob, confuses me as to what is the "logical" thing to do).
With that said, my question to the community is:
Is there a step by step guide out there for a RT on Debian install? I found a couple for other distros <-linux jargon, I'm learning but no luck with Debian.
Man, that's what I tried following, but I could not get it to work. One section talks about using ApacheSSL, another portion talks about Apache2. I am trying to do it with Apache2. I installed everything as it said, but it doesn't work, I don't know what the next step is to get the site up and running (I know, very open ended issue). Like I said, my biggest issue is I'm still learning Linux and the docs there are meant for someone who already has a pretty good grasp on things. I was hoping/looking/searching for a doc that outlines the installation process from start to finish
I searched and could not find a better HOWTO specifically for Debian, but I'll try to interpret anything you are having problems with. If there is something you don't understand, then post it; maybe I can understand it. I've never installed RT before, but I have experience with apache, cgi, exim, etc.
Could you be more specific on what you mean by "I could not get it to work." What did you try and what were the specific results? Did your apache install work correctly before you installed RT?
Thanks for the offer to help Justin, I appreciate it. I will start from scratch, reinstall everything (including the OS) and document my steps (and pitfalls) in hopes you can find where I went wrong.
Here is what I am planning on doing (any input is appreciated)
-Wipe out Debian box (its a test box anyway), perform a clean install of Debian Sarge.
-Install ALL dependencies based on their install guide (found here)
-I'll be using Apache2 w/FASTCGI (install Perl suid; referenced here at the bottom of the page) and MySQL 4.1
Hopefully by following the Manual Installation things will make some sense and actually work. Like I said, I'll be documenting what I do, in the (likely) event something doesn't work.
