Request for assistance in switching from Windows

I would like to migrate my small business from Windows to Linux. Since I am an accountant by profession, my computer skills are limited. But, I am sufficiently tired of Windows that I have reserved the entire summer for this project.

Can anyone suggest how best to proceed?

My computer skills can be best characterized as: user only.

I would take it one computer at a time to get used to the software in a normal work day. Do you have other people working for/with you? They will need to get used to the switch in software also.

For most distros there is usually a simple control panel similar to that used in Windows so getting Linux on the LAN is quite easy.

As a web designer I could only switch one of our two computers over to Linux. This is giving me time to learn new skills but I still need Windows to run proprietry software, especially Internet Explorer, Dreamweaver, and Actinic. I will be trying out WINE soon to see if I can run all that in Linux.

If you're prepared to do the work yourself and do quite a bit of learning along the way, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.
Are you using a network? How many machines? What printers/other shared or networked devices are you using? What connection to the internet do you have?

What I would do in your shoes is initially set up each machine to dual-boot so that you can do the changeover gradually rather than having to have every machine set up and usable for monday morning.

What funtionality are you looking to replicate in Linux? Any specific packages/application you need? Is there a viable alternative? Are the available for Linux or will they run under Wine?

Good luck with this project... if there's anything I can help with along the way just ask.

Thanks for your quick replies!

Iím planning to start off with one computer (not connected to any other) and a fresh new disk (Iíve tried dual boot before, and it didnít work out all that well). Once I get that one up and running, Iíll more along to the next.

So for Iíve gotten as far as trying to pick a distro. Iím currently downloading Mandrake (though it may take a while) so I can try it out before I buy it.

If I donít like it (or, which is more likely, if it does not like me) Iím thinking about Suse or Xandros (I have some Windows applications that Iíd like to keep on using if I can).

The question I have is whether I can boot Mandrake right off the hard disk (and, if so, how), of if I have to burn in onto a CD (and, if so, how).

You should be downloading ISO disk images which are basically a snapshot of the CD image... most burning programs will burn an ISO image with no problem.
From the point of view of distro... I don't know Mandrake, so I can't tell you how easy or difficult it will be to set up. Both RedHat and SuSE are very straightforward for beginners and have the necessary depth for the more advanced user.
I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that you shouldn't have too much problem with your windows apps. Check the Wine website for more details.
