Hello,
I use to use Ubuntu (5.04) and had problems with the synaptic package manager. Now on Suse 10.0 I cannot seem to update or use the installation sources on my home wireless network. Neither can my other machine, which is one the same LAN router, seem to update or contact the Suse mirrors.
Does anyone know why?
Updates etc seem to work when using other wireless networks.
It's annoying as I'm trying to get mp3's to play on my other machine.
Anybody have any ideas? It's very annoying not being able to download stuff needed as I want to configure my comp and there are lots of dependency problems.
dafydd
So the problems are:
-unable to contact your home network from some other LAN
-unable to reach the SuSe mirrors to download the necessary package updates, from a machine on the same LAN
Is that correct?
If it is so, I suspect that the LAN's firewall is blocking the ports you need for the downloads.
I don't know what synaptic uses internally. RPM (RedHat/Fedora) uses Http or Ftp and since those are often
not blocked by firewalls (people like web/ftp access to external computers), I suspect synaptic uses the same.
So, what I propose is that you verify:
-how Synaptic contacts the SuSe mirrors (ie via http, ftp, etc).
-if the mirrors are contacted via http, then try opening their URL in a browser
-if the mirrors are contacted via ftp, try opening an ftp connection to the ftp sites (ie open a terminal, type "ftp <ftp_address_of_mirror>" and see if you can reach it.
-how the LAN firewall is configured and why. The firewalls on both of the machines you mention need to be verified too, but it's possible that the Linux on them has unblocked by default the ports needed for the updates (it seems logical to assume that Linux will want to get the updates).
I personnally have a similar situation, where I can't reach the RedHat Network for updates on my RH8 box, simply because my company's firewall won't allow the access.

finally sussed it out. the dns routers dns-name-servers were different from my providers. now everything works fine (no time outs and can use gaim etc).
