replacing text of a file on remote system

i have server which is unix, and the local system is windows, from local system i need to replace the text of an XML file placed in server, the text which is to be replaced has to be replaced using shell script, then i need to replace the starting text in the xml file with the subsequent xsl filename then i need to copy that modified file to the local system and delete that XML file in the server and then run that file which is now in local system on web browser.

Use ssh/sed as suggested and scp/sftp for the copying to the local machine.
Hold off the deletion of the file on the server until you know that you got everything right.
