renaming or converting a text file to a dat file...

i am using Linux Redhat 9 and would like to convert or rather rename a text file into a dat file for internet connection

mv filename1 filename2
open whichever explorer you use (nautilus in gnome or konqueror in kde) right click on the file and click rename.
