I've recently set my old xbox up as a network drive running Xebian and it seems to be working OK. It's sat in a cupboard and I do all accessing of it remotely using PuTTY and samba(SWAT). It is close enough to plug into the TV so I was wondering if it might be possible to play video files that are stored on it just using my laptop to access it remotely via a web interface?
I haven't done this, but you could setup a streaming server on it using VLC, or something like mediatomb, each of these can be configured to stream via a webserver
You could install mythTV on Xebian, or XBMC directly on the Xbox, both are really good at streaming content to an XBox, it was a popular solution some years ago when millions had an xbox close to their TV
