Hello. I became network administrator at a local food pantry. Now that school has started again, getting there is difficult. Someone decided she needed a new computer and got one with Vista on it. Now I have to get it setup. I would like to be able to use some kind of remote desktop client to set it up. The problem is that I set it up like a home network. They have ATT internet access over a standard DSL modem. The modem takes the IP that ATT assigns it. I also have all of these behind a Dynex router. Is there software out there that allows me to find the food pantry's network? Or am I misunderstanding how to do this? I don't necessarily need to do this from a Linux client, but it would be nice if I could.

I would recommend a no-ip.org account. They have several options for update clients etc. Once that is set up, just allow the RDP ports through the router/firewall (usually port 3390), configure the vista PC to allow remote connections, and have at it.

I would also check the unit provided by ATT. Most of the setups I have seen in the last couple of years (home and business) have included a router so your setup may have a router behind another router. The dynex may need to be set up as an access point, or the ATT unit should be in bridge mode.

Thanks. I don't know about going through a business though. They say free, but I question it. Also, going through someone else makes me think of security. A ssh tunnel or other encryption from point to point would make me feel better. There is some sensitive information on these machines (so if I have two routers, the extra firewalls make me feel better also).

Good luck with whatever you decide to do, but as an account holder for almost a year and a half, I can tell you a no-ip.org account is in fact free. I would also warn that 2 firewalls if incorrectly set up can be more dangerous than no firewall at all.

Another idea is to have an onsite user to send you a remote assistance request from the Vista machine.

I thought about remote assistance. The problem there is that someone has to be there to let me in. They stay there until 3 at the latest. School isn't out until 3, and I don't get home until 4 or 5. I could not find a nice way to use remote assistant, so I figured remote desktop would be easier.
