remmina problem

I have just got a VPN to handshake for the first time but I want to use remmina to control my desktop from a remote netbook. I cannot find any instructions for setting up remmina's preferences so I cannot judge which are are important etc.

Can anyone offer advice?

Hi,

If you 'right-click' on the Remmina tray icon you have the option Preferences to go directly to that part. You could also click on Open Main Window - Edit - Preferences or Ctrl-P when in the main window. Is that what you're looking for?

Kind regards,

Eric

I don't wish to be rude but I think that you may have misunderstood me.
I can find the questions, it is the nature of the answers that I want
to get to grips with. So to be more specific

Having got a VPN tunnel working, my next job was to activate remmina.
Under 'Preferences', the only entry change that I have made is to insert
the tunnel port number.

Under 'Remote Desktop Preference'. I am confronted with the following:

Name: I chose one but does it matter what I choose? Does the remote
desktop 'know' its own name?
Group:What entry is required here? I haven't entered one.
Protocol: I left at 'VNC - Virtual Network Computing'. Should it be
something else?
Server: Here I have entered my current IP (mine is allocated
dynamically). Alternatively, should I be entering the
VPN address for the server?
Repeater: This means nothing to me. What is it for?
User name and password: I used those that I normally use to access the server.

Any one of these items set wrongly may well prevent satisfactory operation,
that's why I was seeking somewhere where there might be explanations.

Sorry for the verbosity.

Regards,

Name: whatever you want
Group: doesn't matter
Protocol: That's for you to know. what protocol do you want to use?? If it's a remote windows box, it's be remote desktop.
Server: Clearly you need to tell it where to connect to. Why would you connect to yourself??

If you don't know what other things are, you don't need to know them. Note that Remmina couldn't care less about your VPN, it has no idea it is there. It just needs a remote TCP address to connect to.

Well the server is a Linux box and it just cannot connect to it.
I cannot find much on the www about debugging a desktop connection hence my request here.

well this isn't debugging. This is pretty basic config that the remmina docs will tell you all about. What protocol do you want then? VNC? In that case you would need to run an VNC server on the Linux box. Remmina is just a multi protocol client, nothing to write home about, and should be the very last thing on a list to sort out for remote graphical desktops not the first.

Personally, I think VNC is a virus, and I don't like spreading it... I would *VERY* strongly recommend you use NX from nomachine.org instead (free for 2 concurrent users, ignore freenx if that's all you need). Remmina can be an NX client, but the official NX client itself is much better anyway.

Also note you may well have no need for a remote desktop at all. Do you know you can run individual graphical apps between Linux servers by default using just ssh?

Hi,

There's no rudeness at all in you pointing out that I might have misunderstood you. And don't apologize for being verbose. If your first post would have included this level of verbosity I would have understood what you were asking right from the start. I apologize for the confusion. Our respected mod acid_kewpie has given you more than what I could have provided so I'm not going to repeat part of it. Hope you can figure it out.

Kind regards,

Eric
