Reinstalling XFree86 breaks xkb functionality

In an attempt to install windows truetype fonts, I wound up uninstalling and reinstalling the xfree86 package (I'm running Slack 9.1) to recover freetype that I accidentally deleted. I backed up the XFree86 config file and restored it after the reinstall, but I'm still running into a few minor problems. Most significantly, the ability to type international characters that I set up with an xkb symbols file and xmodmap no longer works. See my old thread regarding that here. I confirmed that the uscustom file is still in the proper directory, that XF86Config sets uscustom as the layout to use, and that my .Xmodmap file still exists. What in the process of reinstalling xfree86 would cause this to stop working? Thanks in advance.
