Reinstall or recompile?

I am relatively new to Linux. I want to upgrade/recompile my kernel. I am currently running release # 2.4.22. As I understand it, I can apply patch after patch until I am up to the current 2.6.xx release. I am assuming that, to make things easier, I can recompile with 2.6.0 over my 2.4.22 release. Thereafter I can apply patch 2.6.1 etc. Am I wrong in thinking this? Do I have to apply every single patch between 2.4.22 and 2.6.xx?

no you don't have to apply every patch, unless you have lots of time
on your hands, and thats what you actually wanna do ...
all you have to do is go to kernel.org, and grab the full source, which if
i remember correctly it will be about 40 MB, and then recomple it ..
