Reduce LVM Partition size without any data loss

Friends,

In my RHEL-5 ,root partition is created as Logical Volume(lv0),he Problem is all hard-disk space is allocated to that volume. So there is no space in Volume Group and hard-disk.Some one has created this LVM during Installation. Now i want to reduce root partition size to create partitions, with out any data loss of / . I have used "lvreduce" command but after that my linux was crashed nd giving "kernel Panic" error during boot.

For ur information SWAP is also created as logical volume (lv1).

Please help me to reduce or resize my root partition in mentioned scenario, with out any data loss.
