Redhat8.0 kernel-source not available on CD
 

Hi All,

I have installed Redhat8.0 on my toshiba laptop (Satelite 1115-S103) , and was looking to add kernel-source for 2.4.18-14 on the laptop, but i could not find that on the Source CD of Redhat8.0 (usually comes with 6 CDS - 3 Install disks, 2 Source CDs, and 1 DOC CD), so i tried to get the kernel-source from rpmfind.net (http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/redhat/...8-14.i386.html
), and installed that on the laptop (since i want to modify kernel to make it work with PCMCIA), after the kernel-source installation and a reboot, i am having diffuculty with my resolution on the screen - all I see is lines for the login screen.
Has anyone seen this problem, is it a kernel-source compatibility issue? why does'nt Redhat ship kernel-source in its CDs?

If all you did was install the kernel source file and reboot, that won't change a thing (you might have done more than that but didn't indicate such in this posting). RedHat does include kernel source, there should be I think 2 full CDs of source with the RH8 distribution.

You also might want to look at some updates. Since RH8 was released there have been a *lot* of updates released to fix security issues, compatibility issues, bug fixes, etc... The latest RH8 kernel is 2.4.18-19.8.0

Thanks for your response, I did search in both the source CDs in RH8.0 for kernel-source* and could not see it there, I will check it again when I go home today, after the install of kernel-source that i obtained from rpmfind, I started seeing lines in my screen, but once i uninstalled the kernel-source(rpm -e kernel-source), and rebooted, the screen looks great, that made me to conclude that the kernel-source was the culprit, but I am very new to linux to vouch.
and also i tried yesterday to upgrade my kernel to 2.4.18-19.8.0, it worked fine, but as soon as i installed the kernel-source for 2.4.18-19.8.0, i got the same problem of lines on the screen. I uninstalled that kernel-source also and the screen came back to look good after a reboot.
I will post any findings i see in the night.

Have a look for a kernel-devel rpm on your install cd's.
