RedHat Linux installation problem

I purchased RedHat Linux 9pro last month and basically it has the wrong kernel version to work with my new serial ATA RAID controller. It doesn't see it while installing the OS even after using the driver disk. I called Promise, they told me I have to have kernel version 2.4.2-8 but mine is 2.4.2-6 So how can I install a fresh copy with the newer kernel?

I'm new to linux and this group but I'm sure I'll be around here for a while now!

Did the installation work but just not recognise the raid controller?
If so you can download an rpm for a later kernel from the RedHat website (or a mirror) and install that.

It might be that you then have to recompile the kernel to get support for your controller. Here's how.

I would suggest that you recompile the kernel. I'm not sure if the rpm will configure certain things for you, and it sounds like you want support for it configured into the kernel. Follow either jkobrien's link, or there's a sticky in one of the forums here [slackware?]

Can I get an ISO with the correct kernel?

I'm trying to install a new copy at the same time and boot to the device in question so I don't really have an upgrade path of an existing install. Forgive my ignorance, I'm really trying to learn this OS and the boss is breathing down my back to get this machine running, which doesn't make things any easier!

Sorry if I misunderstand, but I take it that your install didn't work at all because of the lack of raid controller support?

If that is the case, I don't see anything else for it but to get hold of installation CD's for another release or distro. (my own recommendation is for slackware). It's possible to download all you need from the various websites.
