Redhat distro kernel build questions

I am an old time Linux guy, but just now getting back into the superior OS. I wanted to understand how clean the distributions have gotten so I installed Redhat 9. When I went through the GUI build (was impressed it was this polished) I selected a workstation image. Now I want to add software development (gcc) and kernel building. When I use the add software tool it tells me I need certain lib's. When I go to get them it says I have newer versions of those installed already. I seem to be in a catch 22... Help?

Are you using the RedHat RPM package manager ?

Did you try install the RPM from the command line using the rpm command ?

Strange...

A quick way to solve this problem:
Instead of using the RPMs from your CDs, download the newest RPMs from the RedHat Network or any other FTP site.

Or

you can always force the installation,
however this may cause problems.
