Redhat begs me to subscribe to services
 

In konqueror, the homepage is set to /usr/share/doc/HTML/index.html which asks you to subscribe to some premium service.

I tried changing the homepage to google.com in konqueror preferences, but it still goes to /usr/share/doc/HTML/index.html (even though i see the homepage saved in preferences)

When I delete the file /usr/share/doc/HTML/index.html it just lists the directory contents of HTML, so that doesn't work either.

/usr/share/doc/HTML/index.html doesn't tell you how to disable the message, it just wants you to subscribe to premium services.

Any help is appriciated, have 2 friends who have this problem.

Google didn't help me when I searched for the problem... neither did usenet.

Yeah, apparently there's no way to make konqueror open to your home url, none that I could find anyway. I does go to it if you click the Home button though. I also didn't see anything in the konquerorrc file that changes it. My suggestion is to simply not bother with konquerer. I guess alot of people like it, but if you're moving around through files and directories, use a terminal.. cd, ls, cp, mv, rm, etc.. it's better anyway. As for web browsing...

Try using mozilla as your web browser; I think you'll find it nicer. :) (Or opera, or galeon, or mozilla-thunderbird though its's still in development).

I am so never installing Red Hat. They just misspelled "mond", it sounds like to me. Commercializing browser start pages - where have I seen that before?

If they want to beg me during installation (much like MS asked you to register during installation before they *required* you to do so) then fine. But when browser pages start getting set and desktop icons start appearing and so on... Ugh.

Sorry I can't help - I agree with epicurus - switch to an xterm or mc or filerunner and Mozilla.

Yes, tried all of them, even lynx and w3m and whatever that new bare-bones (but still runs in gui) one is.

I prefer konqueror for some reason, I think it's really nice.

I could edit the index file to make a <meta refresh=...

but I don't want to do it unless its a last resort.

:eek: idea :eek: how about putting a javascript.goto.homepage(); or something in the index.html file... I will do that if the problem has no fix.

BUT -- I'd rather "really" fix the problem rather then making a crude patch though. ;-)

And I agree man.... kinda like when you install Aol Instant Messenger (AIM) on windows, it makes shortcuts all over the place that says "Free aol internet!!*#!@#" hah, gay.

When my friends get new boxes (and won't install linux) first thing I do is go help them remove all unnecessary trash from their PC. That usually entails ALL references to AOL and MSN, along with a few other things (sometimes Earthlink too). I cannot believe how much AOL trash you find on PC's... I'd think it was a virus if I didn't know better!

You can set both a homepage and start page IIRC. The start page is the one you are needing to edit, not the home page.

RedHat has forgotten what Linux is all about... Such a shame too becuase they used to have a nice distro. Go Mandrake all the way, one of the few distro's around that still uses only 100% GPL'ed software and they don't beg you for money every two minutes...

Open Konqueror
navigate to your "home page"
click settings
click Save view profile "Web Browsing"
then you will have to hit save again and it should open to where you set it.

Cooner: What version of konqueror are you using? I'm using 3.0.3-13 and I don't see any "save view profile" anywhere...

3.1-10 redhat

I just went and checked my RH8 box running 3.0.3-14 and your right the is no way to save profiles there.

lucky for jon_k, he's using redhat 9 :) Oh, and this is a good place for a *topical* debian or gentoo plug.. if you want to get away from commercialization, try them. I *love* apt; it's by far the best package management system I've seen (okay, I've seen apt and rpm.. apt kicks rpm's butt).. difference is redhat sets up all your configs for you and I'm too lazy/busy at the moment to do it in debian; once your system is set up, (imo) debian is better (and you won't get crappity crap like that)..

Though I should mention in RH8, where you can't change it, the start page is ~, your /home directory, so it's not that bad.
