Redhat 9 Remote Desktop Sharing at Login

Quick question regarding the "built-in" Remote Desktop Sharing now included in Redhat 9 (Shrike)

I mucked around and can make it work, but can only connect to it if a user (any user) is logged in to KDE and has a desktop.

However, I can't seem to make it share the desktop after a user logs out. It just kills the VNC session at my end.

This is rather frustrating at times as this is about the last thing I need to work out before I can call my redhat workstation builds 100% remotely administerable.

The main reason that I require this functionality is - I can't rely on the users (who call for WAN service over the phone) to log me in and out of the remote machine. It would be really handy to be able to use RDS and log in as a user, then logout and log back in as root. Rinse & Repeat.

Thanks for your help

-Nick

Have you tried looking into VNC ware. (ie TightVNC)

This is another way to do it. It allows you to do what you want.

Just a suggestion...

Tried very hard but couldn't get an actual VNC Distribution to play ball on the server side.

I did have success connecting to the VNC server using the built in java interface (e.g xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:5902), but this did not allow me to take direct control of what was on the remote monitor, it was only a virtual desktop.

In the end the built-in RDS in Shrike is a pretty good trade-off if only I could get it to stay connected without a KDE session it would be perfect.

Thanks
