RedHat 9 And Window 98 problem, please help...
Hello all,
I am very-very new here. Know nothing. I did search for my answer but couldnt find it. Here is my problem: I downloaded 3 disc files (I386 - redhat9) from redhat web and I burned all of them into 3 installable CDs. I have window 98 run on HP pavilion 6500, I put brand new harddisk as slave. I installed redhat9 into the new harddisk, during installation everything went smooth, no problem, run media check no problem on CD I burned. At the end when I boot my PC, it came out with a word "GRUB" at the left corner screen of my PC and I wait and wait ... nothing happened. According to the installation guide it supposed to have 2 selections boot system either Win98 or red hat Linux 9. Does any body out there can help me.. please, please. Regards, TopiMerah. |
Hi,
what i would do is put the new hardrive as the primary drive and you may need to run the setup on linux again. but skip everything, just reconfigure the boot loader. grub is one of the boot loaders that comes with red hat, the other option is lilo. but either one will do what you need it to do. hope this helps. -ito |
Hopefully, you made a boot disk. Put it in the floppy drive and use it to start Linux. In Linux, open a terminal window and change to root:
su - <root password> Then try reinstalling GRUB: grub-install hda Reboot the computer. It should work now. If it doesn't, here is the link to a GRUB manual: http://www.linuxselfhelp.com/gnu/gru.../grub_toc.html If that still doesn't work, give LILO a try. On Red Hat's website, they have the manuals for RH9. Here is the link to the installation one: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/l...g-x86-en-9.pdf As for moving the drives around and changing the master/slave relationship, be careful. Both Linux and Windows set themselves up in relationship to the drive designations at the time. Changing them causes them to not work. Linux can be manually corrected and made to work, but Windows cannot. It will have to be reinstalled. As I said, I would not move the drives around. You have a minor problem with GRUB Stage I not finding Stage II (the manual will explain this). Much easier to just work this out. Good luck. |
I have it installed. Not sure because HD jumper or both system have to installed in Primary Master. But here what I did, I switched my HD and reinstalled Window to Master HD and then reinstalled Linux to master HD.
