Redhat 7.2 wont allow ANY video configuration with Matrox Millenium g200 pci
I have searched everywhere for the answer to this problem....
I just did a clean install of Redhat 7.2 on a bp6 using the graphical interface. However, when I get to the final step, configuring the video modes, none will work. I know that the video card works, because it just came out of a box running peanut-linux at 1600x1200. The Redhat install, OTOH, won't even display 640x480 with 256 colors.
The graphical interface that I use to choose the operating system (I can choose between the SMP version and the single-proc version of RH), displays correctly.
I then get to the login prompt (which flickers, strangely), type in my login and pass, and everything is hunky dory.
I get my prompt [root@sevendust root]# and type startx -
and I get a flicker, then 2 warnings:
1. couldnt open module bitmap (does not exist, 0)
2. couldnt open pcidata (module does not exist, 0)
Unable to load base modules, exiting...
then a fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peeer)
and I get kicked to my root prompt.
Any thoughts on this? Xconfigurator does not allow me to use any configs. It searches and finds the appropriate hardware (Dell monitor, matrox g200 with 8mgs of memory), refresh rate is correct, but when it tries to test, it says that the test failed, and allows me to go back.
sounds like some sort of bug or something, have you checked out redhats site for anytype of problems or maybe xfree's site for any issues with your card and configuring it with X? have you tried generic drivers during the setup as well, or maybe using not Xconfigurator but maybe xf86config or XF86Setup to configure X?
I looked around but could find nothing with regards to bugs. In fact, everywhere I looked said that this particular card is fine with this distro. I have tried other configuration software, to no avail. I am going to get another card, to see if that is the problem first (borrow one, of course) If that works, I know its a bug, and Ill post here. If not, it must be a problem with the installer/distro.
Thanks for the link. However, I went the same route and got an agp S3 virge card for testing, which has now created new problems.
I am unable to install xfree86 4.10 from the Redhat disk, it says that the checksum is incorrect. Howerver, the checksum for the entire disk is correct. Any help/ideas about how to get around this one? the new drivers for the g200 require xfree86 4.10 to work according to their site.
