When I restarted my web server running RedHat 7.2 it didnot go to the graphical environment (Gnome). It stays in the terminal mode. Any ideas why this happens?

You can check to see which runlevel it started in. It should start to runlevel 5. You could look at /etc/inittab to see what it is set at.

Thanks for the reply.

It is running in runlevel 5
x:5:respawn:/etc/x11/prefdm -nodaemon

I think my problem is the disk space!

tmp #df tells me
FileSystem........1k-block........Used.......Available........Use%...........Monted on
/dev/ha5...........380679.....380679..................0........100%........................./

When I look at /tmp; I have the following files that are rather big in size. Do you think I should delete them?

Files are
tmp # ls
formpost formpost-4 sess_5894351....
formpost-1 mcop-root sess_342432...
formpost-2 orbit-kevin sess_342432...
formpost-3 orbit-root sess_342432...

tmp #ls -l
-rw------- 1 root root 26853376 Jun 7 13:16 formpost
-rw------- 1 root root 0 Jun 7 13:17 formpost-1
-rw------- 1 root root 4096 Jun 7 13:17 formpost-2
-rw------- 1 root root 0 Jun 7 13:17 formpost-3
-rw------- 1 root root 39903232 Jun 7 13:36 formpost-4
drwx------ 2 root root 1024 Oct 14 2004 mcop-root

Do you think that this is the problem? And if ues should I delete any of thes files?

Yes, I would try and delete those.

You can also look in /var/log/ and look at your X's log file to see if there is any indication in there as to what happened.

Will it start up if you type "startx"?

No, It won't start with startx.
When I do it, It seems that it wants to go to X, but it can't go in, and it goes back to the terminal mode.

So is it safe to delete them?

The /tmp/formpost files seem to be related to Mozilla. You can probably safely delete them, but if you can, I'd move them to a drive or server w/ more space, just to be sure.

Maybe you could look for other things to delete too. Old .rpm files, maybe old source files from programs you've installed.

Benji - You are correct. They do belong to mozilla. I was trying to backup some files over to my other server yesterday, when mozilla crashed. And obviously the cashed files were over at /tmp.
So, I went a head and deleted the files. Guess what, everything went back to normal.

Thank you again for your quick replies and help. -- Kevin
