Question Redhat 7.2 on Compaq laptop

I am trying to install Redhat 7.2 on my Compaq Presario 1200z after many trys I finally found out that if I enter linux nousb during the intial install it will let me install everything, then to get it to boot I have to hit ctrl X and type linux nousb and do a interactive bootup and tell it not to load kudzu.

Now the reason I have to do all this is because it freezes when it tries to initialize usb, and I think the same problem when it trys to detect new hardware. But after all this to get it booted I keep getting kernal panics normally after I start xwindows, I am using kde, but I have also gotten the kernal panic just running the command line.

If anyone could point me in the right path I would be very happy.

20 Gig drive
320 megs ram

This is just a hunch, but have you tried disabling PnP in your BIOS.. I'm not familiar with the BIOS of that laptop, so bear with me on the exact terminology. I would try looking for that first and/or disabling the option to let your BIOS handle PnP ... let your OS (linux) handle it. Again, some laptop BIOS's have this, and some don't. But maybe that will help?

That would be the easy thing to do but unfortunatly my bios on that laptop only has 2 options you can change superviser password and change boot order, I have already called compaq 2 times trying to find how to disable the usb in bios or somehow at the bios level but to no avail.
