RedHat 7.2 installed, but can't start anything
Hello,
I just recently installed RedHat 7.2 (for the second time). Each time, after a supposedly succesful install, the disk ejects and I boot into Linux, but it won't start in the graphical log-in mode that I selected. After I log-in and type "startx" here's what comes up: (**) XKB: model: "pc105" (**) XKB: layout: "us" (**) FontPath set to "unix/:7100" (**) RgbPath set to "/usr/X11R6/lib/x11/rgb" (==) ModulePath set to "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules" Couldn't open RGB-DB '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb' (WW) Warning, couldn't open module bitmap (EE) Failed to load module "bitmap" (module does not exist, 0) (WW) Warning, couldn't module pcidata (EE) Failed to load module "pcidata" (module does not exist, 0" Fatal server error: Unable to load required base module, Exiting XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0:0" after 0 requests (known processed) with 0 events remaining. Have you configured X yet? Type xf86config and go through the options as appropriate to your hardware and see if that helps.

OK,
I configured x during the install (both times). I just typed in what you said, went throung the whole checklist and at the end it said that it coulnd't write to that file. Do I need to add something else at the end? Thanks for the help! Confused |
you can also try Xconfigurator or setup
what kind of hardware are you using and did you check out www.xfree86.org or www.redhat.com if its supported with whatever version of xfree86 7.2 comes with.. ?? |

First of all, THANK YOU for all the help.
Yes, I did try to configure 'x' as root. Does it do it differently when you run 'setup' as opposed to 'xf86config'? I'm trying to use it on a Compaq Presario 5050 Celeron 333mhz 8GB HD 96 MB RAM 3D Rage LT Pro video card with 2MB SGRAM |
Any one know if my system should be able to run Redhat 7.2?
Compaq Presario 5050 (details listed above). As suggested above, I configured x as root, it says it was done successfully, but once again when I type in 'startx' the same problem occurs (mentioned above in first post). Any other ideas or suggestions? Another distro that would work with my hardware? :smash: |
Usually all distros are a headache to get X to setup correctly. Right now Linux is running fine on your machine, but X is a different story altogether. Honestly, you might get Mandrake to setup X better, and quite possibly Suse, although I haven't a lot of experience with that one. Basically its a matter of getting your machine's card info and display settings dead on. Keep fiddling with xf86config and you should get there, although the most important thing to get right is the vertical and horizontal display settings of your monitor, which if you're lucky are on the back of the thing.

Thanks for the info and the luck,
I'll keep trying! Matlin |
Well I finally found the exact settings for my monitor and video card, but I've still had no luck getting X to work. I've run xf86config too many times to count (as well as Xconfigurator).
When I run 'xf86cofig' and look through the video card list, I can't find my exact card (ATI 3D Rage LT Pro) and when I looked at xfree86.org, it doesn't show that my card is supported. I'm guessing that I need to find an exact match?!? The closest thing is an ATI Rage LT Pro (that's not the same as my card is it?). When I ran Xconfigurator it detected everything, including my card: ATI: 3D Rage LT Pro AGP-133, but every time, no matter what I chose, I couldn't get it to work. I get the same screen as noted in my first post of this thread. Is it probably the card? If so, are there any solutions? Thanks, Matlin |
I've had the same problem with Rage 128 Pro and i810
Since misery loves company, I thought I would let you know that I am experiencing exactly the same error message on 3 different DELL machines (each with Rage 128 Pro) and with a new off brand machine with the Intel 810 chipset.
I have used Redhat successfully since 6.2. In fact all of the machines I've mentioned work fine with RedHat 7.1. I am really looking forward to someone posting a specific remedy. Cheers |
Have you tried selecting the unprobed video card? I have not had any truoble with X at all. My video card was not on the list so I selected the unprobed video option, then before continuing tested the resolution i wanted to use. Once it worked with the resolution I selected 800x600 I continued and had no problems at all.
Hope this helps!!! |
I had similar problems configuring X and its probably due to your card not being supported.Server version 4.2 has just come out in the last few days, head over to xfree86 site and see if your card is mentioned in the change log.

XF86Setup
hi,
way back in RH 6.2 , there was a utility called XF86Setup which was great cos you could get it running using the VGA16 server and keep twiddling with the setting until you got it right. since you've tried everything else give it a shot. search for it at rpmfind.net or redhat.com. if nothing works , try using the FrameBuffer server. this involves a kernel compile , which is good for you!!! good luck. penseur2 |
Same problem here
I am having the same issue, I have tried 2 PCI cards 1 is an ATI Rage II 3D , the other is an aOPEN sis 6429 , I have also tried the onboard video on my older compaq, all get the same error
