Redhat 7.1 woes (sig 11)
 

All,

I have to admit to being a newbie at Linux (and hence why I came here), so far im totally hacked off..

I have Redhat 7.1, an Asus A7V, Amd Athlon 1G, 768Mb Ram, 32G HDD and a 32Mb Matrox G400 graphics card...

Firstly it took me over two weeks to get RH7.1 onto the damn thing.. I discoever the trick of useing 'mem=32m' and switching to the second console and typeing 'sync' every so often and it worked, I actually installed it!!!

I was useing it happily and then applications kept crashing with sig11 errors....

I duely exited from KDE, went back in, 2 mins later, same problem, I tried to log out.... X bombed on me, just locked with a grey screen and an X... so I power cycled and it complained and said I needed to run fsck manually, I thought I might have to..
BUT, not when I run fsck it locks up again!!!!

Considering Ive heard many people sing the praises of Linux, Im very dissapointed... I have built 10 machines of this spec, the other 9 have winnt4 and win2K , no problem, can I get RH 7.1 on this one? nope...

Ive tried different memory aswell, Ive tried just one 256mB DImm also...

Is there a problem with RH7.1 and Asus mother boards?
or is redhat 7.1 really this unstable?

I think by far the easiest way to install rh is go a dual boot with windows, use partition magic to install in win. A small win partition of windows 95 only needs to be around 150 megs safely and then whatever for partition magic. Then just go into the rh install with disk druid, and put a / for your linux partition and it will recognize the swap space if you also made that in partition magic. It should be a really easy install with redhat

What type of install were you doing, custom, desktop? The best way I know of to install RedHat is to install a custom, so you can create the partitions, pick the packages you want installed.

Redhat as far as I know doesn't have any specific problems with Asus boards. To verify you might want to then check out www.redhat.com for any problems with hardware compatibility.

But I use redhat daily at home, no problems ever.

It was indeed a CUSTOM install, I Did create the partitons using disk druid and I picked all the relevant packages (most of them actually)

Ive been to the redhat site and couldn't find a thing, that said its not the most logically laid out site for finding specfic problems on.

are you still getting signal 11 errors? that almost always indicates a hardware problem, not software.

It seems stable 99% of the time, sometimes I get Sig11 errors when trying to run some of the apps, they'll open work for a bit, then die...

Ive tried new memory, same thing exactly.... this is why I suspect some motherboard/kernal problem...

I'll try a different mother board later this week..
