Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Iīm pretty upset and need help because I have now installed RH 9 several times with always the same miserable results.
first I tried to upgrade from RH 8.0. The result was a normal boot but at the end just a black, slowly blinking screen. No text or graphics.
So what I had to do was to boot to the other harddisk on the pc, save all my files securely there (mount from hdb) and totally reinstall from the scratch RH 9 on hdb.
It worked ok for a day (didnīt reboot it once) and I had just managed to reconfigure my ximian evolution 1.2 and start receiving emails when I tried to log out and come back.
The screen went black & doesnīt react at all !
I donīt know if I should cry - what the hell is the problem ? and donīt tell me its x86free because I have no idea what to do with it. Can I just switch it off and restart, enter single user mode and type something on the command prompt that will start the x-system ?
My pc is Compaq presario 5000, video card compaq 815.
This will switch to the first tty where you should get a login prompt. Try to login as root then issue these commands:
(wait about 5 seconds
This will restart the x server basically. If that works, then the logout function is broke, which I have seen before. I had it happen on one box and not another. I believe I also opened a ticket for it with redhat but the problem went away with a different version of redhat.
