Red Hat 9.0 question
 

I have a HP laptop that I'm intersted in loading RH 9.0. I'm assuming that the ISO image on my disk 1 does not have a boot file and it won't kick off. My system is completely wiped and I'm trying to start over. Anyone know where I can get a boot disk to get the OS loaded. Thanks.

redhat distros are bootable?

I thought they were....I went on a training trip, and was given a set of disks with RH 8.0 and tried loading that on my laptop and it kicked off the install fine. But there was some rpm file missing or corrupt and the install aborted. So I have decided to try 9.0 since it's new...

I have redhat 9 running flawlessly on my HP ze 4230. The 1st disk should be bootable, as long as "cd-rom first" is selected in the BIOS. One VERY important thing to remember when installing linux on HP laptops is when the program Anaconda starts up early in the installation to detect hardware, you need to tap a key (I used space) on the keyboard repeatedly until the curser starts moving on the screen. If you don't, the built-in Ps2 keyboard can easily be missed . Other than that Redhat 9 was born for these machines. Keep in mind that if you want a working battery monitor on the desktop, you will need to recompile for ACPI support.

Everything made sense except the compiling part....LOL Still wet behind the ears with UNIX, and more so with Linux...

Do I need to have another file?

You need to burn the iso image to disk, not copy the .iso file to a cdrom. what burning software do you use?

well once you properly burn it, it will be bootable...it appears you burnt a data cd when you tried burning the image..

Put a blank cd in the drive. If a dialog box comes up tell it to take no action or just close the window. Right-click on the disk1.iso and select "burn to cd" or something similar. It should then create a disk based on that iso file. That will be a bootable disk. You need to do this for each disk (1-3).

Good thing I have a handful of CDRs :D

Pcghost.....thanks for the assistance. Only one more question, and that is how to recompile for the battery monitor. Do I need additional software, or do I need to coax Red Hat to perform it?

Redhat 9. does not need to be recompiled with the monitor.
Do a customer install and select what you want.
Boot up and login useing the KDE session and the batter monitor will be on. Then go into the settings for and adjust to the way you want.
