I just purchased Red Hat 7 and went to install. As soon as I start the install process the computer hangs at this line,

running install...
running /sbin/loader

then nothing, it locks up. I have tried all the troubleshooting websites but can't find any information on this one. If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.

Can you give us a little more information about your setup?

Mine has done that a few times as well. To fix it, i just kept trying.. Usually it only did that after there was an error during the installation. I think I went to install to much and didnt have the partitions correct to fit it all. After the error, when I try to run the installation program.. it would do as yours did. tried again.. and it worked..

I had this problem with RH7, I found that at that, time it was probing for a mouse, which I think involves probing the USB ports.
As I had an Elsa 56k plugged in to one of the USB's, I got the impression it couldnt recognize what it was so just sat and hung.

Try unplugging any USB devices you have connected.

and no, before anybody asks, I didn't get the Elsa working under Linux.

Hi all. I just made two machines. The first was an old P-166; 100 megs RAM; two small drives. I put ME on one and Linux Mandrake on the other - runs beautifully. The other machine is on an asus A7V (socket) board; a gig Athalon t-bird processor, 40 gigs, 256 Megs RAM, all-in-wonder v-card, etc. etc. etc.... I partioned the drive when I stated out (30 gigs for Windows and 10 Gigs for Linux) - however, I can not get Linux to install. I tried the Corel version; I tried the Mandrake (BRAND NEW!!); I tried two versions of Red Hat, and still nothing. What a friend told me was that because my primary bus is so fast (200 MHZ), Linux can not get to my hard drive. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Is there a version out there that can work with the faster boards? Please HELP!!

I have the Asus A7V and I have heard of problems about the installing Linux onto a drive which is on the Promise UDMA100 controller. Try switching your hard drive to one of the standard '66 controllers and see if will install.

I believe it is possible to use the UDMA100 contoller for Linux due to the article on this link:

...although I haven't tried it myself yet but it does sound reasonable.

Let me know if you have success.

Also were you aware of the issues between WinME and the A7V, I thought it was just ME because I was having a lot of lockups and crashes and I had just switched from 98SE. After going back to 98 I read an article on this and you can get round it by altering a couple of BIOS setting, one of the being turning the system performance to standard instead of optimal and I forget what the other was.
