Red Carpet: Unable to acess packaging subsystem

I downloaded the Debian package for Red Carpet, after which I installed it using "dpkg -i <package>.deb". I then su to root, and typed "red-carpet" at the prompt. I see the initial Red Carpet screen, telling me that it is downloading distribution data. But before anything else happens, I get an error message saying

Unable to access packaging subsystem
Couldn't parse /var/lib/dpkg/status: The /var/lib/dpkg/status file is malformed or contains errors
Please ensure that no other package management programs are running and try again.

I don't have any package managment programs running, so I don't know what this message means. The file exists, and I've checked the permissions also. Any help would be great.

I managed to fix the problem. I think that a few of my packages that I had previously installed, weren't completely installed or configured correctly. So, I ran dpkg --configure --pending and now Red Carpet runs fine. Thank god for the man pages!

Angry Similar error

I've a similar problem. Red Carpet says that it can't open RPM database.
I'm using RH 8.1 Beta (Phoebe). Anyone knows the solution?
