recording sound from a mic

The setup:

Slackware 9.0
KDE 3.1
SBLive! soundcard using emu10k1 driver
OSS drivers (I think that's what's preconfigured into slack)

The Problem:

I am currently trying to record sound from a microphone to a file, not an all to complicated task. Unfortunatly, I cannot. I have tried to use KDE's KRec but there is no recording device recogniged. I can however speak into my microphone and hear it come out the speakers. The end goal is to use gnomemeeting but I have the same problem there, gnomemeeting won't pick up on the sound coming in through the microphone either. Hence when I create a connection with say a netmeeting client no sound is transferred over the connection. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For what it's worth, I had problems recording sound with KDE. The problem in my case was that the mixer settings were not configured correctly. I had to use kmix to choose the recording source/level. (Ie, I had selected the source/level using the GNOME mixer, but this did not work.)

Once I changed the settings under kmix, my recordings worked correctly.

Hope that helps!
