Question record sound onto a file

Hi Gurus

I run suse 8.0 (2.4.18-64GB-SMP) with alsa for my sound card. I would like to record sound played in a stream onto a file. Many a time the music played from websites that doesnot show up the URL (or the realplayer plugin is used to hide the URL)

I tried "sound recorder" but it refuses to record complaining that "device not ready or another program is using it".

How to get around this?

Many thanks
