Record movie to .mpg - not .avi?

I want to record a movie (from telly or video-tape) and make a dvd-movie.
Since a dvd-movie needs .mpg movie-files, it would of course be best to record to that format directly.
But all recording programs I've tried (streamer, xawdecode, xdtv, gv4l.. ) saves the recorded movie in .avi
That means the process of creating a dvd is very time-consuming - extracting the mpg-movie from the .avi takes 4-8 hours per movie!
So how can I save it to an mpg-file directly?
