recompiled kernel = kernel panic

I recompiled my mandrake 9.2 kernel, 2.4.22-10mdk and I thought I did fairly well, it was my first time. When rebooting, I get
Kernel panic VFS: unable to mount root fs on 03:02

did I accidently leave out support for the filesystem (reiserfs)?

Oh, and is there a way to install the old kernel back from the install cd's?

sounds like you forgot to include support for reiserfs (i assume that your root partition is formated as reiserfs). you have to compiler reiserfs-support into the kernel - modules will NOT help!

did you not keep a copy of your old kernel? if not, it's a pretty bad situation. you have to boot your system somehow to be able to install any other kernel. try a rescue system from your installation cd (if there's any)... if that won't work try to use a knoppix live-cd and recompile the kernel from there

thanks tokkee

I have the knoppix cd and I figured I'd use it, but how can I recompile the kernel from knoppix? Just mount mandrake and do all the things in a terminal (i think i just explained it to myself). As for the reiserfs support, it would be a big mistake for me not to, I left in support for most FS except for like apple, amiga and things that foreign.

you can chroot to your root partition on your hard disc (e.g. chroot /dev/hda1) - you might need to chmod 666 /dev/hda and/or /dev/hda1 to be able to reinstall a boot-loader if you need to and (of course) your root-partition needs to be in read-write mode!

just make sure reiserfs support is not build as a module!

cheers!

I got ya. I have lilo working right now, it has been, it's just pointing to a kernel that doesn't work. So when I go through knoppix I have to recompile the kernel all over again?
